I am just posting really quickly to mention my experiments with VMware. Currently, I have a working PC-DC server using VMware Player 2.0.3 with Windows XP as the host OS and Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon as the guest OS. Things have been working out pretty well so far. Based on the testing that I have done so far, performance is about equivalent to running an Ubuntu-based PC-DC server natively; I didn't notice any difference during my testing. Using Linux as the guest OS as opposed to using Windows 98 seemed like the better option although I should probably use a lighter Linux distro; I did disable some services, such as Tracker, on the Ubuntu VM. Just to mention it, I used VMX Builder to configure VMware to run an Ubuntu image. I also had to open up my firewall in order to allow connections from my Dreamcast to the Windows XP host OS.
I originally tried a similar setup using VirtualBox but things didn't work out due to a known issue with VirtualBox. http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/812 That's about all that I will mention. |
