I've been trying to get Starlancer to work with a PC-DC server off and on for probably 5 years now. There was a point where I got it to work for a short period of time (I don't think I did anything it just started working).

What's happening is that the game hangs and then fails to connect to gamespy. It says it cannot connect to gamespy. I looked at the traffic log and it appears it's getting hung up on contacting peerchat.gamespy.com. I have the port forwarded that it connects over (6667). It looks as though the game tries three times to contact 69.10.30.243 (peerchat.gamespy.com) and then gives up.

I was able to ping peerchat.gamespy.com so I thought that my ISP wasn't the problem, however, I decided to run a traceroute and found out that the first hop times out, then it continues through 11 or so hops until finally reaching peerchat.gamespy.com. This first hop timeout may be what's causing starlancer to give up and not wait long enough for a response.

I tried establishing a VPN connection to a different ISP and running traceroute again. This time, there was no first hop timeout. Unfortunately I can't figure out how to have the Dreamcast share the VPN connection.

For anyone who has gotten or not gotten starlancer to work via PC-DC server could you post the results of your traceroute? The command in windows (from a command line) is:
tracert peerchat.gamespy.com

If running linux, you have to install traceroute. The command is then:
traceroute peerchat.gamespy.com

Here is what I get. The * * * represents the timeout.

I'll give it a shot when I can. Never tried Starlancer with my pc-dc server though. Only the browsers and PSO.

Reading through some old posts, some were able to connect by lowering the connection speed. Just an idea.

I also could not connect with my pc dc server.. How do you lower your connection speed? Do you mean like on your isp modem or on the pc-dc server?

pc-dc, I can set my modem speed to whatever the modem supports.

To set your modem speed you can use AT commands on the PC side. There may be simpler ways of doing it, but that's what I've always used.

For an update, I just tried the traceroute again, and I no longer get a timeout after the first hop. Unfortunately my PC-DC server and Dreamcast are nowhere near a usable state right now so I can't test anything Sad

I was finally able (read: had the motivation) to set up my PC-DC server again. After buying a new DSL modem, I realized that my traceroute wasn't timing out on the first try, which made me optimistic about Starlancer again.

I got everything up and running and it connected to gamespy after about a 20 second delay and I could see the game list.

I still have no idea if anyone will be able to join one of my games, but at least I can see the master list.

This is the issue I have always seemed to face with starlancer. I usually have no problem seeing the master list and creating a game but nobody can join it. If someone else hosts using standard dial-up I can join and play as normal. If however you have only PC-DC server players connected nobody can ever seem to join no matter who hosts. Almost seems you need at least 1 traditional dial-up player to host to make it work.

I am not sure why this is, I have tried many different things over the years to solve it but nothing seems to work....anybody have any clues?

The main thing I can think of is port forwarding. For the windows 98 setup, the Dreamcast takes the address of 192.168.55.2 which, for most home networks, is on a different subnet and doesn't play well with other devices in the rest of the network.

The ideal way to forward the ports is to have the router forward to the PC hosting the server and then have the ports forwarded in winroute to the Dreamcast. For PSO this works just fine. From my limited experience tinkering with Starlancer, it seems like it's finnicky about the number of hops a packet has to take and the time it takes to make them. Because of that I would try forwarding directly from the router to 192.168.55.2, but because you can sometimes have communication problems between the subnets, this may not work for everyone.

I'd be willing to test out a few different configurations on my end if I can find someone with a dedicated dial-up connection.

@segadreamcaster have you ever logged any of the traffic while playing to see if there may be packets being dropped or ports used we don't know about?

Yeah, thats how I have mine setup at present....forwarded ports in the router to the PC-DC server and then winroute to the DC.

You idea of direct prt forwarding to the DC could actually be worth a try...don't think I ever tried that from what I remember. I guess setting up the entire local network as 192.168.55.xxx could be a good option here...hmmm

As for packet logging, yes I did try this at one point with the help of DreamcastTM, we never could find the problem.

Should be getting this game in the next couple of days. I will try to get a game going through my Netopia router connection and see how it goes.
